Using Microsoft keyboards with Dell laptops considered harmful

Do not use a Microsoft keyboard with a Dell laptop. I just spent two hours trying to fix a computer where that was the problem. You can tell when you have this problem because MS Office zooms in. Not the whole screen, just the document. PowerPoint is particularly bad since not only is everything too big, but the text flickers and you can’t type anything. And since the problem starts when you hit Fn-F8 to show the slide show on a projector, some people think it’s the only app with the problem.

Fixing it: The best way in to delete all of the MS IntelliType software. But since it comes with Windows XP and Vista, that’s nearly impossible.

Otherwise: open the Start » All Programs » IntelliType » Microsoft Keyboard (Warning: IntelliType might have a different name depending on your keyboard model.) If you can’t find the Microsoft Keyboard program, install the full version here. Click on Update and select a keyboard with zoom buttons. The Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 works. Quit the keyboard program and then open it again. There will now be a Zooming tab. Uncheck Enable zooming. If you want, you can change the keyboard back to your real model.

Why does this happen? Keyboards traditionally use unused letters for extra functions. Back in the PS/2 days, this was the only way to add things like the Play and Volume buttons. Both Dell Fn-F8 and MS Zoom map to the same unused letter. (Character code 0x0B) The problem is both do it wrong. USB keyboards should no longer do this since there might be a foreign language keyboard that uses them. There are extra codes specifically used for media control or extra functions. MS ignores the specifications. Dell keyboards are PS/2, so the only way they can work is to use these codes, but they fail to send the key up command. Thus any keyboard driver looking for these codes thinks that someone pressed the button, but didn’t let go.

You might be saying “Why does this happen when I don’t even have the MS keyboard attached?” Because MS keyboard drivers load, even when the keyboard is not attached. So if you ever had one of Microsoft’s magic keyboards on your computer, you’ll still run into this problem.

So, don’t ever plug a Microsoft keyboard into a Dell Laptop. It’s the only way to keep it from happening.

Amazing Workaround

Hi Peter

I think you are the first to find a solution for this problem.

All the other places I have seen suggest to uninstall IntelliPoint.

Naw, see here (particularly the last page): http://hardware.mcse.ms/message270960-2.html

That's not why I'm here though! :)

I've got another Dell QS vs Intellitype issue that there only appears to be kludgy work-arounds for, namely Fn + cursor keys are being over-ridden by MS shortcuts such as launch Office and Messenger.

For the record, so far the solutions involve editing the commands.xml file or doing this by disabling the key in iType.exe. Affected keystrokes in my case are x06 and x13. If disabling through the itype GUI you need to select a keyboard that possesses keys enabling the shortcuts you are experiencing, eg opening Office/Word etc.

Talk about a PITA and agree with Peter wholeheartedly. If you're thinking dell, think logitech ;)

Happens all the time....

This happens to us all the time. Not sure what you mean, though, by: "But since it comes with Windows XP and Vista, that’s nearly impossible." That I know of, IntelliType is not part of the OS, but maybe it is part of Dell's factory image.

Re: Happens all the time....

The driver comes with XP & Vista. Even without the rest of the software, it activates the back/forward buttons. And it seems to also do zoom. At least, uninstalling IntellType didn’t have an effect.

Microsoft keyboard zoom interaction with Dell notebooks

Thank you so much for this fix! I disabled the zoom function for my Microsoft keyboard and now I can get back to work again (after losing 3 or 4 hours today on this problem!). I hope Dell and Microsoft will work this one out soon.

Office auto zooming with Fn-F8

Solution: Kill the itype.exe process via task manager

Duration: Solves problem until you reboot.

Impact: Aside from solving the problem, killing itype.exe does NOT appear to affect the ability to use the shortcut keys (calc, mute, etc) on the keyboard.

Rhetorical Question: If killing itype.exe does NOT disable the hotkeys then what the hell is this process doing?

Rhetorical Answer: Who cares.

Background: As described earlier, when you hit Fn-F8 on a Dell laptop to display an Office docement on a screen, the document portion of the display auto zooms to max magnification. Grabbing the zoom tool, will adjust the zoom until you release the tool. Then it automatically zoom back to max magnification.

Peter of the Norse spelled out the details more clearly than I have ever seen. Presumably he is on track.

Ecosystem: I have seen this a number of times on a Dell laptop where the user has loaded the MSFT Intellitype keyboard software. I see lots of discussion on how to solve this problem.

The simplest way is to kill itype.exe whenever you are about to display something via Fn-F8. It works for me.

Re: Office auto zooming with Fn-F8

Thanks for the simply solution (and to Peter for the in-depth analysis). This problem has infuriated me more times than I can count.

dell / msft keyboard - you nailed it

rahmcoff - great post - nailed the solution. installing a msft keyboard was the only thing i could think of that changed, but i only had the problem running ppt as i needed to shift to projector. I wasted hours farting around in front of customers trying to recover my presentation display and trying to fix this. Thx for the answer.

Thank you Thank you Thank you

You have no idea how much time I spent trying to work around this. There's many posts around the web that offer a "solution", but this is the one that works.

Thanks for taking the time to post.

fyi

the last solution is the "Best" We have seen many times where we have uninstalled the intelitype software only to be called back next week for the pc not getting past the dell logo. After removing the MS peripheral the system boots again. Unfortunatly now I have a user that does not have the software installed at all and has the issue. I suspect it some how picked up the added features from the os, yet does not have a disable zoom in the keyboard area.

Here's how to stop itype.exe from running Windows Messenger when + is pressed, but still allow it to adjust the screen brightness down:

1) Temporarily rename the Windows Messenger executable (msmsgs.exe, located in C:\Program Files\Messenger).
2) Press + . itype.exe will bring up a dialog asking what action to perform since it can't find the Messenger executable.
3) Select "Disable this key" and press .
4) Rename the Messenger executable back to msmsgs.exe.

Similar steps can be done to disable other keys (e.g., + , which starts MS Word).
